History:

The Serra da Capivara National Park is located in the state of Piauí, in northeast Brazil, and was designated a National Park in 1979. It is Brazil’s oldest and largest protected area of archaeological and historical significance. The area of Serra da Capivara was inhabited by humans since at least 12,000 years ago, and archaeological evidence suggests human occupation as early as 22,000 to 26,000 years ago. This makes Serra da Capivara one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world, predating the famous Iron Age fortress of Masada in Israel by more than 10,000 years. The Serra da Capivara National Park contains the largest concentration of prehistoric sites of any other area in the Americas. It is home to over 310 archaeological sites, some containing unique and beautiful rock art depicting daily life of some of the earliest inhabitants of the region. The national park is also extremely rich in ecological biodiversity, with an estimated 3,500 species of plants and 360 species of birds living within its boundaries.
