The Aquário Marinho do Rio de Janeiro (Marine Aquarium of Rio de Janeiro) is a public aquarium located on the Guanabara Bay waterfront in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was opened in September 2000 and is the largest aquarium in South America. The Aquário Marinho do Rio de Janeiro was built with the assistance of French company Compagnie des Alpes (CDA). The venue was developed in two phases, taking six years and costing an estimated R$80M (US$43.7M), and is owned and managed by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The aquarium's aim is to promote education, environmental preservation, and awareness of the unique marine biodiversity of Brazil. It contains 10 themed exhibitions and over 4,000 fish of more than 500 different species. It also organizes animal interaction activities such as swimming with dolphins and encounters with penguins, seals, and sea lions. The Aquário Marinho do Rio de Janeiro regularly hosts scientific research as well as educational and artistic programs. It also offers internships to university and high-school students.
