The Mokubilo Monument is located in Boseja Village, about 17 kilometres from Maun, Botswana. It is situated near the Mokubilo Hill, a copper deposit discovered in 1968. The Monument was erected in 2011 to honour the late Tawana Mokubilo, who was one of the first people to discover and mine the copper deposit. Since its erection, the Monument has become a valuable landmark and a local attraction. The monument was designed by acclaimed South Africa-based British sculptor Fillip Oosthuizen and features a 7-metre tall stainless steel sculpture that depicts Mokubilo seated on a Black Wildebeest, with handles on each side. Around the base of the monument are four bronze sculptures; two of Tawana Mokubilo and two of other miners. The Mokubilo Monument commemorates Mokubilo’s notable achievement of being one of the first people to mine copper in Botswana and the significant role that the copper deposits had in the economic development of the region. It is a symbol of Botswana’s mining heritage, and serves to inspire future generations of miners and entrepreneurs.
