The Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone was initially constructed as a multi-purpose facility for use in sporting events, concerts, expositions, cultural gatherings, and other events. Construction of the stadium began in 1981 and was completed in 1984. It was created on the sites of an old cattle post and copper mine and is located in the southeast part of the city. The stadium was initially owned by the government of Botswana and was managed and maintained by them until 1997 when it was sold to the Gaborone City Council. The stadium is currently the main sporting facility in Botswana and hosts football, rugby, cricket, track & field and tennis matches as well as concerts, fairs, and other events. The stadium consists of four main stands encompassing 16,000 seats, including VIP and executive seating areas. The stadium also has a large score board, an athletic track, and a flood lit playing field. The National Stadium is also home to the Botswana Football Association and serves as the main venue for the Botswana Premier League matches. In 2003, the stadium underwent renovation such as the replacement of several seats, revitalizing of the playing surface, and installation of a new pitch irrigation system.
