The Plaza 24 de septiembre is the main square of Cochabamba, Bolivia. It is located in the heart of the city, and has been a major gathering place for centuries, even before the founding of the city. The square was initially a battlefield, located between the Spanish invaders and the original indigenous people of the area. The first time the square was officially referred to was in a 1794 document declaring it to be the "Main Plaza". During the 19th century, several important buildings were constructed in the plaza, including El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church (1867), the Palace of Justice (1878) and the Municipal Palace (1890). In 1933, a large obelisk was built in the center of the plaza to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, one of the last battles of the Spanish-American wars of independence. In 1958, the General Pablo Terrazas Statue was unveiled in the plaza, a prominent local hero of the war of independence. Throughout its history, the Plaza 24 de septiembre has been a site of public gathering and celebration, especially for anniversaries of the war of independence and major national events such as elections and inaugurations. The square is marked by a large collection of flags of the various regions of Bolivia, and is often the backdrop for public concerts and festivals.
