History:

Coroico is a small town situated in the Greater Yungas of Bolivia. It is situated in the La Paz Department, capital of the Nor Yungas province. The town is relatively small at 2.25 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 12,334 in the 2012 census. The town lies at the foothills of the Coroico mountain range and is home to the K’ara K’ara native group. The origin of Coroico dates back to colonial times, when the Spanish used the area for agrarian and forestry activities. Coroico was established in 1775, when five indigenous families founded the town. The town continued to grow and developed a diverse economy, mostly based on agriculture and trading. In the 1930s Coroico became a popular tourist destination with the establishment of the first hotel in the area. People from all over Bolivia came to Coroico to enjoy its beautiful scenery and lush vegetation. In the 1950s road infrastructure was improved and Coroico became accessible by car and later by public bus. In the 1970s Coroico hosted a popular annual carnival with participants from all over Bolivia, which eventually grew to become one of the biggest festivals in the country. The 1970s were a time of political turmoil in Bolivia, as the military took control of the government. Coroico was affected by the political instability, with hundreds of people being killed in the area during the political unrest. In the 1980s Coroico became a small centre for cocaine production. The cocaine industry brought prosperity to some of the inhabitants, but greatly affected the environment. Fortunately, the cocaine industry has now been eradicated from the area and Coroico is currently developing a new economy based on ecotourism. Its main attraction is its beauty and the lush vegetation and is now the center of many nature-based activities, like trekking, horseback riding, mountain biking and rafting.
