History:

Plaza de Armas, also known as Plaza Murillo, is located in La Paz, Bolivia. It is one of the most remarkable and emblematic squares of the Bolivian capital. Since the foundation of the city of La Paz, Plaza de Armas has been part of its history. The plaza was originally known as Plaza del Correo or Plaza Mayor and its construction began in 1559. It has been witness to struggles such as the Battle of La Paz, during the War of the Pacific. This was the decisive battle for the independence of Bolivia from Spanish rule. In 1939, the square was renamed as Plaza de Armas by the former president Don Jose Delmar who also redesigned the square as a symbolic homage to those who fought to ensure freedom for the Bolivian nation. In the center of the plaza there is a monumental fountain from the year 1938 surrounded by a variety of vegetation. On either side of the fountain there are statues of XVIII Spanish Virrey and XVIII Bolivian traditional El Cardenal Antonio Mora La Revolucion. There are also four interesting 18th-century bronze cannons pointing towards the four cardinal points. Today, the Plaza is the most important civic and political venue in Bolivia and a reference point in the capital.
