History:
is one of the most ancient and famous monasteries in the region. Founded in the 13th century, this temple is widely revered by locals for its spiritual significance. According to legend, King Ugyen Gyalpo of Bhutan is believed to have meditated in this temple. It is believed to have been constructed by Lama Nima and renovated by the 4th King of Bhutan - Gyalsey Tenzin Rabgay. At present, it houses a wonderful Dilgo Khyentse Rimpoche statue and also certain auspicious relics. It is also said that Guru Padmasambhava's image may also have been installed at this temple. Reports also suggest that a number of monks reside in this serene and peaceful location. Worship Method:
The traditional worship methods of Phajoding Goenpa encompass both ancient and modern Buddhist ceremonies. There are elaborate rituals, hymns, and recitations involved in these Devotional activities. The most prominent among these is the three-day Drubchen (Great Accomplishment) ritual, which involves the making of tormas (offering cakes) and chakras (mandalas) as offerings for spiritual guidance and the accumulation of merit. Other associated activities include the performance of fearful mask dances known as Cham and the circumambulation of the temple while chanting mantras. Buddhists also perform prostrations and mandala offerings, as well as various prayers and rituals. It is believed that through these activities, one can become free of negative influences and obstacles to spiritual progress. The nearest town to Phajoding Goenpa is Thimphu, which is the capital of the country. The easiest way to get there is by road, as the distance is about 22 km. From Thimphu, follow the road to Paro and then take the turnoff for Phajoding. The road is well-paved & not too difficult, so it should take about 40 minutes in total.
