Worship Method:
The Chokhor Valley Temples in Bumthang, Bhutan are a cluster of spiritually important temples that are dedicated to the Buddhist religion. These temples are sacred sites for the Bhutanese people and have been the center of religious worship for centuries. The temples consist mainly of at least three structures - the Yungdrung Kailo, the Guru Lhakhang and the Chokhor Lhakhang temple, though there are other historic structures in the immediate vicinity. In order to worship at these sacred temples, worshippers must dress appropriately and remove their shoes before entering. There they can make offerings in the form of flowers, incense and food before prostrating before the holy object or image within. Worshippers are then expected to chant sacred mantras as a form of prayer. The belief is that by chanting these mantras, worshippers can purify their heart and gain merit which brings good fortune. Worshippers can also recite prayers and doctrinal writings to further deepen their spiritual connection. In addition to the chanting of mantras and reciting of doctrinal writings, worshippers may also participate in a variety of religious rituals. These include circumambulation of the holy objects within the temple, which is usually done three times in a clock-wise direction. Worshippers may also carry out traditional meditative practices to access and absorb the spiritual energy present within the temple. At the end of the religious worship, worshippers typically conclude by saying a prayer for peace and wellbeing, and thank the deities for blessing them for their visit.
