Bartsham Monastery, also known as Bum-Thing, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery belonging to the Drukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The monks of the monastery practice the traditional and strict monastic life of Buddhism. The primary practice of the monks is to maintain monastic discipline and do Dharma practices. The primary worship practices at the Bartsham Monastery employ chanting, meditation and reciting mantras. The chanting of mantras are conducted either alone or as a group. There is a strong emphasis on purity, generating compassion, and enlightenment practice. The monks also engage in puja, or prayer, to obtain and invoke worldly and spiritual realizations and merit. The main religious ritual practiced at the Bartsham Monastery is the Guru Rinpoche ritual. This is a two-day ritual which includes the Guru Puja and Lam Rim. The Guru Puja is a ceremony which focuses on the recitation of Guru Rinpoche's mantra. The Lam Rim is a set of teachings that explains the principal Buddhist paths and practices for achieving what is known as the 'Gift of Dharma'. Other rituals performed at the monastery include Tsok Puja, which is a ritual offering to the deities and protector spirits, and Torma Puja, which is an offering ritual that is used to appease the local spirits and deities. The monastery also hosts various offerings and celebrations throughout the year such as New Year celebrations called Loso, Saga Dawa, which is the annual celebration of Buddha Shakyamuni's enlightenment, and Lord Manjushri Day, which is an annual celebration of the birth of Lord Manjushri.
