History:
San Pedro House was founded in the latter part of the 19th century by a group of Mestizo settlers hailing from the central part of Belize, in the area now known as the Corozal District. They established a small fishing village on the south-eastern coast of Ambergris Caye. According to written sources, the earliest settlers in the area could’ve likely been migrants coming from the nearby country of Mexico. For centuries, the small population of San Pedro remained relatively isolated from the other parts of central and southern Belize. Furthermore, the island was largely untouched by the tourism industry of Belize until the twentieth century. In the 1970’s, however, things began to change for San Pedro and the island became the first destination in Belize deemed suitable for tourism by the government. In 1974, the first dive resorts opened on the island and the area has slowly grown into one of the top tourist destinations in Belize. Today, San Pedro is known not only for its diving and fishing activities, but also its cultural appeal. Many different cultures, including people from Central and South America, and different Caribbean islands, have converged on the island and brought with them an eclectic mix of architectural styles and cultural customs. From its humble beginnings in the late 1800’s, San Pedro has grown into a vibrant and diverse community that reflects the ever-changing nature of Belize.
