History:

Nim Li Punit is an ancient Mayan ruin located in the Toledo District of Belize. It was built in the late classic period, around 600 - 900 A.D. Its original name was T’Hó, meaning The Stone of the Green Macaw, and it was part of the great Kanu’b ruler, Ajaw Kawil dynasty which covered about 500 sq kms. The site contains several plazas surrounded by nine more building complexes. It also has one of the most famous Mayan sculptures known as Stela 14. Nim Li Punit was occupied mainly during the Late Classic Period and it is believed to have been one of the most important commercial sites in southern Belize at the time. Later, it was abandoned due to the constant wars between the different Mayan city states and the drift in the population when the Mayan civilization started to decline. The most obvious signs of its decline are seen in the numerous small buildings found throughout the ruin, which were probably built long after it had been abandoned. Today, Nim Li Punit is a protected archaeological site and is located Lake Izula, where visitors can visit the ruin to learn about its rich history. Even though much of the site has been overgrown by flora, its majestic stone structures remain standing for thousands of years and are a popular tourist attraction in Belize.
