History:

La Loma Luz is an ancient Maya archaeological site located near the village of Blue Creek, close to the Mexican border in the Toledo District of Belize. The site was discovered by Ursula Sautter, a German archaeologist, during her field research in Belize in 1938. Since then, it has received considerable attention from archaeologists working in the region. La Loma Luz is believed to have been continuously occupied by the Maya since the Late Classic period (600 – 900 AD). The site includes four major plazas and various architectural features, including ceremonial buildings, civic-ceremonial plazas, and altars. Excavations at the site have revealed that the Maya there engaged in a variety of activities including pottery production, bead-making, stone and wood working, and dyeing of cloth. Artifacts uncovered from the site show a wealth of ritual and religious practices, as well as ideas and artifacts from far away places. In the late 1980s, La Loma Luz was declared a protected site by the Belize Institute of Archaeology and anyone wishing to visit the site must be accompanied by a local guide. Excavations are still ongoing at the site and it is slowly being restored and preserved, allowing more people to experience its unique and fascinating history.
