History:
Ghent University is one of the oldest universities in Belgium. Founded in 1817 by King William I, the University of Ghent is located in the city of the same name. It is the fourth oldest university in the country and the first government-supported university in Belgium. It was originally ruled under the Dutch Royal Family, but after the Belgian Revolution of 1830, the university took a secular direction. The university initially started out with only a few departments, such as philosophy, medicine and law. The university quickly grew and by 1837, it already had 13 faculties. It then extended to 20 faculties, which are still part of the university today. In the 19th century, the university also established a number of research institutes. In the first decades, the university’s main focus was on humanities and sciences. It was not until 1960 that the university opened its first engineering program. Since then, the university has continued to develop and establish internationally renowned research institutes. Ghent University is currently ranked among the top universities in Europe and the world. Visit one of the famous monuments of Belgium with your friends and family.
