The cathedral's construction began in the 12th century and was not completed until the 15th century. The building is renowned for its Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and houses precious works of art and religious artifacts. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The present structure of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Tournai goes back to the 12th century, although some traces of earlier structures still remain. The main part of the building was built from the 12th to the 14th century in Romanesque style. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Tournai is the oldest Gothic church in Belgium and one of the oldest in Europe. It is 143 metres long and 64 metres tall, with five towers, including the tower of Saint-Maurice that reaches a height of 77.8 metres. The elaborate decoration of the façade is especially noteworthy, as are the many sculptures among which the 15th century statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
