History:

The history of Aalst Town Hall in Belgium began in 1225 when a new town hall was built on the ground of an existing church, which was destroyed in a fire. The Town Hall was built in the traditional Flemish style and quickly became a revered landmark in the city. In 1530, the Town Hall underwent major renovation work and acquired its Gothic belfry, which is still standing today. The Town Hall also served as a prison during this period, when wealthy merchants were sent to the dungeons as punishment for tax evasion.
