History:
St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk is one of the oldest churches in Belarus. It was first mentioned more than 1000 years ago in chronicles, and was built around 1044 during the reign of Vladimir the Great, who was prince of Polotsk. The cathedral was built in the Byzantine style and incorporated such features as rounded apses and a large central dome that rested on four piers. Inside the cathedral there were several chapels and a special chapel dedicated to St. Sophia, a 4th-century Christian martyr. The cathedral was destroyed by fire and rebuilt at least four times in its history. It survived a major fire in 1708 and underwent extensive renovations in the early 1800s. During the Soviet period, the church was turned into a museum and used for art exhibitions. After Belarus became independent in 1991 the cathedral was once again used for religious services.
