History:
The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Hrodna, Belarus is a Catholic cathedral that has a long history of religious significance. It was constructed in 1393 by Prince Nikolai Gediminas and originally belonged to the Holy Trinity Monastery. Until 15th century, it was the highest and largest Cathedral in the city. In 1601, it was transformed into a Roman Catholic cathedral and given the name “Cathedral of the Holy Spirit”. After authorities took control of the cathedral in 1864, it was used as a warehouse. In the following decades, the property changed hands various times, and by 1920, the cathedral had been mostly destroyed. Restoration of the cathedral began in the 1950s as part of a city-wide effort to repair and rebuild destroyed churches. Over the next few decades, the building slowly recovered its original state. In 1991, the newly independent Republic of Belarus restored the cathedral to the Roman Catholic Church. Today, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is an active religious site and has held numerous services and events. It is the main Catholic church in Hrodna and celebrates an annual May Festival.
