History:

Saint Sophia Cathedral was built in the 11th century by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise. During that time, Kyiv was the cultural and religious center of Kievan Rus’, a powerful East Slavic state that dominated parts of what is now Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. The cathedral was the first church built in the state, and became the main temple of the city's important and influential Metropolitan bishopric. It was expanded and renovated several times, and survived several wars and natural disasters, including the Mongol invasion of 1240. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Belarus.
