History:

Pishchalauski Castle, also known as the Red Castle, is located in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The castle has a long and fascinating history, dating back to at least 1568, when it was first mentioned in a list of royal property of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 15th century, the castle served as a fort and trading post between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During this period, several defensive structures and outbuildings were erected around the castle to protect it from attackers. In the 16th century, the castle was attacked and burned down by the Russian forces of Ivan IV the Terrible during the Livonian War (1558-1583). The castle was rebuilt and used as a prison during the war. In the 19th century, the castle was renovated and used as a military barracks. In 1812, during the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was destroyed again, this time by French forces. It was rebuilt yet again in 1843 and served as a military base until the end of World War I.
