The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic parish located in Cologne, Germany. It is the oldest church in Cologne, and its building dates back to the 12th century. The building of the church was originally funded by the wealthy merchant Rainald von Dassel, who served as the Archbishop of Cologne from 1159 to 1167. The church went through a period of destruction and reconstruction during the 19th and 20th centuries, but it still stands today. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a long history of serving its community. During the 14th century, the church was the site for a procession twice a week in separate prayer for both the living and the dead. The church was also used for confession during the Middle Ages, and in the early 15th century it served as the municipal coroner's church. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has served as the site for many important events throughout its history. Pope Urban IV celebrated mass here in 1261, and the Archbishop of Cologne blessed Charles IV as the King of the Romans in 1346. The location was also the site of the first Evening School which was organized by Cologne's Jesuits. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is still a functioning parish today. Masses take place regularly, and the church was recently remodeled to make it easier for people to access. There are also various devotional services throughout the week, and the parish hosts special events and ceremonies, such as baptisms and funerals.
