Brief History:

Tangail Central Jame Mosque is one of the oldest and most famous mosques of Tangail division, located in Tangail town of Bangladesh. Built in the fifteenth century by Sultan Shatiruddin Firoz Shah of Bengal, it is considered to be the oldest surviving mosque in the district. The mosque is built on a high ‘mosque-style’ platform with five domes, one larger central one and four smaller side ones. The frame of the central dome is a bit closer than the other four. The main prayer hall is extended by two side circular rooms called yakra. The entire structure is made of terracotta bricks and its walls are decorated with various patterns. Inside, large woodwork is used to cover the walls, and a pulpit, made of marble and decorated with saffron, white and blue stones, is situated on the eastern side. Apart from prayers, the mosque is also used for various religious programs such as Hafezia, Hatlaj, Qasidah, etc. During Ramadan, special night prayers are also held. The mosque was constructed in 1706 by a Bengali nobleman of the Mughal court, Tore Khan. The mosque features a two-storeyed design, set on a raised platform. The main prayer hall occupies the upper storey and is flanked by four large domes that crown its picturesque façade. The three smaller domes lining the middle row of the façade are surrounded by four tall towers that add to the majestic beauty of the grand structure. The exterior walls are decorated with ornamental paintings, terracotta plaques, filigreed engravings and intricate glazed tiles. The lower storey houses a large enclosed space known as 'Haat Khana', which is used during the month of Ramzan for the purpose of public supplications. The interior of the mosque is adorned with intricate calligraphic inscriptions and floral designs. The two-storeyed central room leads directly to the main prayer hall on the upper storey, accessible via a staircase. The main prayer hall is surrounded by four octagonal minarets. The Tangail Central Jame Mosque also houses a madrasa (school), a library and a mausoleum. Its manicured lawns, gardens and ancient trees add to the tranquil atmosphere of the premises.
