Shitala Mandir, Rajbari is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Bangladesh. It dates back to the 16th century when the Mughal rule was established in the region. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Shitala Mata, the goddess of smallpox. devotees flock the temple to pay their respects to the goddess and seek blessings. Worship at the temple is conducted primarily through daily puja ceremonies that are conducted by the temple priests. During the puja ceremony, offerings of flowers, fruits, incense and offerings of light are presented to the deity. The priest also chants mantras and performs aarti which is the lighting of small lamps that are then offered to the deity. In addition to the puja, worshipers also perform parikrama around the temple. As part of the parikrama, worshipers chant mantras and make offerings of roasted gram and modaks (sweet dumplings). Devotees also offer the chanting of Bhajan, a form of devotional singing. Another important part of the worship of Shitala Mata is the regular evening arti performed with the accompaniment of the temple’s instruments. There is also a major celebration held every year to honor the deity. During this celebration, the temple is decorated with flowers and light. If you are traveling by car, Shitala Mandir in Rajbari can be reached by taking National Highway 34 from Dhaka to Rajbari. After about three and a half hours of drive, you will reach Rajbari and then take the second left turn after about 1 km as you enter the city. After taking the turn, the temple is located at a distance of about 1.5 km.
