Brief History:
Sherpur Central Jame Mosque, Sherpur In Bangladesh is an old historical Mosque which stands as one of the symbols of a remarkable cultural and architectural heritage of the country. The mosque was built in 1584 by Moulvi Jalan Uddin Migrants on behalf of Sultan Shayan Khan, the ruler of Bengal. It was then known as the Shaheed Khana Mosque and was a very important religious site in Sherpur. The mosque has been reconstructed and refurbished multiple times over the past centuries and currently, it is beautifully designed with numerous domes. The main entrance leads to a huge courtyard which houses two minarets close to the front porch of the mosque. The main prayer hall also contains a 52-pillared veranda and three small rooms for private worship. The building also contains several tombs of holy men and saints who visited the mosque centuries ago. The mosque is considered to be the second oldest mosque in Bangladesh and is open to visitors throughout the year. It is one of the most famous mosque in Bangladesh which you must visit.
Architecture:
The architecture of Sherpur Central Jame Mosque is characterized by its traditional Mughal style. The mosque is made of brick and has a number of domes that are topped with ornamental finials. It also has three arched entrances, a few recessed archways, four corner towers, and three separate mihrabs on the eastern wall. The central domed chamber is divided into four chambers and decorated with intricate stucco floral patterns. The mosque also includes the qibla wall with four mihrabs and an ornate mihrab niche. The walls are adorned with terracotta plaques depicting scenes from Islamic history. The roof is topped by four domes, the central one being larger than the other three. The exterior walls are also decorated with terracotta plaques and colorful floral patterns. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
