Brief History:
Khan Jahan Ali was a powerful Muslim saint, popularly known as ‘Baba Khan Jahan Ali’ living in the 15th century in the region of present Bangladesh. He was a saint and a scholar. He built many mosques in various historic and important places out of his philanthropic activities. His most remarkable mosque is the Shaitgumbad Mosque situated nearby the bank of river Kopotaka at Bagerhat, Bangladesh. The Khan Jahan Ali Mosque is regarded as one of the largest and beautiful mosques in the Subcontinent. The rectangular shaped Mosque was constructed between 1459 and 1478 and was extended latter very much. The height of this single dome is nearly 45 m and 6.4 wide at the foundation. The overall length of the Mosque is 184.56 m from east to west. It has four corner towers decorated with several clay designs. Overall the architecture of the Mosque is a combination of four architectural patterns: Afgani, Mughal, Bengal and Hindu. The Mosque also contains a large pond and lush green field towards which the Mosque was built. The Mosque also contains graves of Khan Jahan and his son. The Khan Jahan Ali Mosque is a fifteenth century religious complex located in Bagerhat in Bangladesh. It is one of the country’s best known Islamic monuments, with a unique blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The site is composed of several structures, including a large rectangular mosque, a mausoleum, four minarets, a mahfilkhana, a pond, a clocktower, and a range of other smaller buildings. The main mosque is the most impressive structure, measuring 114 by 56 meters and topped with four huge curved domes. It features isi-style (covered with sphynxes) walls and the interior is adorned with ornate beams. The mosque also has four minarets that add to its grandeur. The mausoleum is a majestic structure built in ceramic and terra cotta with inscriptions in Persian. It was built in honor of Khan Jahan Ali, the great fifteenth century Sufi saint. It is located in the inner chamber of the mosque. The clocktower, situated in the center of the mosque complex, is the main feature of the complex. It was most likely built during the nineteenth century and serves a purely decorative purpose. The mahfilkhana is a secondary place of worship housing the tombs of local saints and is also a meeting place for the devotees. The pond surrounding the complex serves a practical purpose by supplying the entire complex with fresh water. The pond also serves as a scenic focal point and meditation spot for the pious. The Khan Jahan Ali Mosque is a perfect example of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles delicately blended into one unique structure. Khan Jahan Ali Mosque is located in Bagerhat District, Bangladesh. It is about 270 kilometers from Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The nearest airport is Jessore Airport, about 119 kilometers from Bagerhat. The closest train station is Bagerhat Shatghar Station, about 1.3 kilometers away from the mosque. The best way to reach the mosque is by taxi or rickshaw from Dhaka, which takes around 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take an overnight bus from Dhaka to Bagerhat, which takes around 6-7 hours.
