Zoravor Church is a 5th century Armenian Apostolic church located in the historical region of Greater Meghri, in the Syunik Province of Armenia. Situated among gardens and fields, the eight-aisled domed basilica is one of the largest and most important churches in Armenia and an important pilgrimage site of the country. Its construction is believed to have been initiated by the prince Vache and finished in the year 469, but it may have passed through changes over the centuries. The church includes a bell tower originally built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in the 17th century. The chapel of St. Astvatseghatsi (14-15th century) and the large cemetery next to the church are also part of the monastic site.
The church is dedicated to Virgin Mary(Zoravor) and is one of the most ancient and religiously important monuments in Armenia.According to tradition, the name Zoravor means “visiting mother” or “arriving mother” referring to the Virgin Mary and her apparition to the people. The interior walls of the church are covered with frescoes by Hakob Hovnatanian and his workshop originating from the early 19th century, as well as scripts, story-scenes and the twelve archangels. The church also hosts the oldest known Armenian alphabet inscription, which was carved in the 6th century.
Today, Zoravor Church is an important religious center and a popular pilgrimage site. It is also widely visited by both locals and international travelers, especially during celebrations such as Easter, All Saints, and the Birth of the Virgin. Services at the church are still held today and it remains one of the most iconic and beloved churches in Armenia.
