Surb Kiraki Church In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
Surb Kiraki Church, located in the small village of Akhtala in the Lori Province of Armenia, is an impressive sight. It was built in 1063, during the reign of King Gagik II. It is a monastery located near the Debed River gorge and is considered a symbol of faith, strength and dedication.
It is one of the best churches in Armenia which you must visit.
History:
According to legend, during the repeated invasions of the Turks and Persians, the Debed River area kept the locals safe and sound. As the invasions kept coming, the people of Akhtala asked the local church leader, Bodig Bedros Kantzabolia, to build a church in the village which would serve not only as a place of worship, but also as a fortress. Kantzabolia chose the imposing location of the Debed River gorge and established Surb Kiraki Church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Armenia.
