Khorakert is an important archaeological site located in the Aragatsotn province of Armenia. The site dates from the Early Iron Age, from circa the 9th to 6th centuries BC, and is one of the oldest and best-preserved settlement sites from that period. It is considered to be the best-preserved Iron Age settlement in the Transcaucasian region and is a protected archaeological site. It is one of the best churches in Armenia which you must visit.

History:

Khorakert was first discovered in 1974 and was excavated by Professor Marr Herman beginning in 1975. He found evidence of a large fortified settlement and an aryk (an Armeno-Iranian drainage system). The surrounding area was covered in a ring of numerous stone mounds and is thought to have been used as a place of defense. The excavations eventually unearthed a large settlement as well as a variety of architectural features including earthen and stone curvilinear walls, long dwelling platforms, and a complex system of potty-bowls, storage and refuse pits. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Armenia.
