St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) is one of the most popular and venerated saints in the Armenian Apostolic Church. She is the patron saint of maternity, childbirth and motherhood. Her feast day is celebrated on August 14th. According to tradition, St. Astvatsatsin was the mother of Jesus Christ; she is often depicted in art holding a child and at times giving milk from her breast. She is believed to intercede on behalf of those who come to her in prayer and ask for her assistance. St. Astvatsatsin churches and shrines are common throughout Armenia and are special places of prayer and pilgrimage.
