St. Sargis In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
St. Sargis is the patron saint of young people, love and friendship in Armenia. He is celebrated primarily on February 10. The celebration, called Sahmanbar or Saghmosavank, features feasting, games, and prayers. This holiday is inherently multiple-layers, featuring both pagan and Christian elements, including animal sacrifices, food offering, and games such as egg-breaking. This is the time that young people initiate courtship, exchange gifts, and visit the Saghmosavank Monastery, where St. Sargis is buried. The monastery, which is located in the village of Vzk, was built in the 9th century and boasts of exquisite architecture.
