History:
The Evangelical Church of Armenia grew out of the Armenian Mennonite congregations that emerged in Soviet Union during the late 1920s. The first Mennonite congregation was founded in 1929 in Yerevan. During the late 1950s, under the guidance of American missionary Rev. Theodore Zuern, the Mennonite congregations began the process of forming an official church body. This process was interrupted by the Armenian Earthquake of 1988, in which over 25,000 people were killed. Though the earthquake left most of the Armenian population in financial ruin, it provided an opportunity for the church to come together and form the ECA as an “service oriented” church. The ECA was officially registered with the Armenian government in 1991 just after the fall of the Soviet Union. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Armenia.
