The Barekamush Surb Grigor Monastery is one of Armenia's oldest monasteries, located in the Garakar village of the Shirak Province. It is believed to have been founded by Gregory the Illuminator (Aristakes Lastivertsi) in the year 301 AD. The monastery is known for its unique architecture, made of limestone, and is surrounded by two churches, a bell-tower and a chapel. The main church, built in Medieval period, is dedicated to St. Gregory. It houses a number of ancient paintings and manuscripts. There are several other chapels located in the monastery and its surroundings, such as the Chapel of Malevans and the Chapel of Hovhannavank. The monastery also offers services to pilgrims and visitors in the form of accommodation, dining and religious ceremonies.
