St. Sarkis Church in Armenia is a small 4th century Armenian Apostolic Church located in the Noravank Monastery complex in Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Its history dates back to the beginning of the 4th century, and the church underwent many reconstructions over its lifetime. St. Sarkis is a domed hall-type church, with a single-nave ground plan, a two-storey entry section and three small extensions. Its walls are adorned with carved columns, ziggurats, towers and bas-reliefs of Tamara, a lion and eagles. Inside the church is a dome composed of 12 spherical pieces, painted in the traditional colours of yellow, red and white.
The interior of the church contains a sanctuary and altar, as well as a crypt storey in the lower part of the wall. The Church’s frescoes date to the 17th and 18th centuries, and depict the life and deeds of Saint Sarkis and other Christian saints. The Church also houses reliquaries and a collection of khachkars (stone-engraved crosses).
Services at St. Sarkis Church are offered by the priests of the Christian-Armenian Apostolic faith, and many Armenian visitors and believers come to the church for prayer, pilgrimage and reflection. Special services are held during the celebrations of different religious days throughout the year, such as Easter and Christmas. Additionally, weddings and baptisms are commonly held at the Church.
