The Plaza de la Republica is located in the heart of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The plaza is most widely known for being the site of the Casa Rosada, or Pink House, the home of the President of Argentina. The plaza was first established in 1856 during the urban renovation of Buenos Aires after its independence. At the center of the Plaza was the Carré Reformista monument, a memorial to the 1853 reformist revolution. In 1898 the monument was replaced by the Monumento Ecuador, a statue honoring Ecuadorans who fought for Argentinean independence. The Plaza was further expanded and redefined in 1914. This redesign included the construction of the central obelisk, which was designed to honor the dead in World War I. The obelisk is the most prominent feature of the plaza today. The redesign of the Plaza was also accompanied by flowerbeds and trees, which are still present today. In parenthesis to these renovations, the Plaza de la Republica was also the site of the 1958 World Cup Final between Argentina and Brazil.
