The Monumento a Roque González de Santa Cruz is a monument located in the city of Posadas, in the northeast region of Argentina. The monument is dedicated to the memory of a Franciscan friar who is sometimes called “The Apostle of the Misiones” because he traveled and evangelized in the region for 16 years. The Monuments inauguration took place in July 17, 1971. It is located in a public square in the city, that was dedicated in honor of the Apostle. It has a grand monument that was erected in memory of the Franciscan monk that is 18 metres in height. It was designed by the sculptor Luis Perlotti and built by Domenico Pippelain. The central figure of the Monumento a Roque González de Santa Cruz is a heroic size sculpture of the friar dressed in a Franciscan habit, representing his mission and travels across the province. The clothing was recreated and tailored after original 17th century style using material similar to what was used in 1620 - 1621. He carries a staff and a scapular with a cross over his chest. The statue rests on a large marble plinth with five bronze reliefs. The reliefs are composed of five scenes from the life of Roque González. In the first relief Roque González and three other friars arrive to the New World from Spain. In the second relief he is welcomed by the natives upon his arrival. In the third relief, Roque González is seen teaching and converting the natives to Christianity. The fourth relief shows him in distress from his enemies. The fifth relief shows Roque González taking a few steps of his last journey before his death.
