The Monumento a José Hernández is a monument dedicated to the famous Argentinian poet and writer José Hernández, located in the Almagro neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Founded in 1945 on the 7th anniversary of the poet's death, the monument is a tribute both to the man and to his seminal work, El Gaucho Martín Fierro. The monument was designed by the Spanish sculptor Josep Argentine, and is composed of three parts: a bust of José Hernández, a sculpture of the Gaucho Martín Fierro, and El Payador Perseguido, a bronze relief that depicts the title character of Hernández’s other great work, El Payador. The monument has been located in the Plaza José Hernández since 1945. In 1993, the statue of José Hernández was moved from its original place in the center of the square to a nearby side street due to repair and restoration work. The other two sculptures were removed to allow for the construction of the Padilla Subway Line in 1995.
