In the 1940s, Holy Cross Church was established by the Bishop of Monterey to provide a place of worship for the mainly Cañarian, Portuguese and Filipino families living in the Santa Cruz area. Initially, the church was located in a hall, until it was able to purchase land in the area near Ocean Street and get building funds from its parishioners.
