Catedral Basílica de Mercedes-Luján is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján located in the city of Mercedes in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is named after Our Lady of Mercedes. It is considered an important religious monument of the country and one of the most interesting examples of provincial neoclassical architecture. It is one of the best churches in Argentina which you must visit.

History:

The first construction was carried out in 1717 by the Jesuit Joaquin de Mercadillo, the then-bishop of Mercedes. Initially made in adobe, the construction was severely damaged in 1754. Subsequently, two stages of reconstruction and restoration were completed, one led by bishop Mariano Medrano in 1761 and the other by bishop Manuel De Oliveira in 1873. In 1928 it was consecrated as a cathedral basilica. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Argentina.

The cathedral is known for its great beauty and decoration. It has three naves and a total height of 34 meters. It also contains a wide collection of sacred artworks, such as a large crypt, four large altarpieces, three images of Our Lady of Mercedes, three images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and eight statues of the saints. The main altar is composed of polychrome marble, and is considered one of the most beautiful in the country.
