Basílica de los Santos Pedro y Cecilia is a Roman Catholic basilica located in the Spanish town of La Seu d'Urgell, in the Catalan Pyrenees. Constructed between 1225 and 1290 CE, it is one of the most important and best-preserved Romanesque churches in the region, and has been an active place of worship for centuries. The basilica is dual dedicated to the early Christian martyrs, Saint Peter and Saint Cecilia, and is renowned for its Gothic and Romanesque-influenced architecture and spectacular interior decoration. In 1993, the basilica was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with other monuments of La Seu d’Urgell. It is one of the best churches in Argentina which you must visit.

History:

The construction of Basílica de los Santos Pedro y Cecilia began in 1225 by the master builder Arnau Despuig, on the site of an earlier Romanesque Chapel, which itself on the site of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Cupid and Psyche. The project was completed in 1290, and the basilica was consecrated in 1313. During a period of two centuries, successive local aristocrats financed and built the basilica and its components, creating a unique amalgam of styles and different expression of ecclesiastical art. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Argentina.
