History:

Little Ffryes Bay is a small, sheltered bay on the Caribbean island of Antigua in the Leeward Islands. The bay is located on the north-eastern coast of the island, just south of Long Bay. The bay is protected from the open waters of the Caribbean Sea by several small, uninhabited islands, including Great Bird Island and Little Bird Island. The bay contains one small island of its own, Spire Island. The first recorded history of Little Ffryes Bay dates back to the early 17th century. During this time, the area was colonized by Europeans, including the French and British. The French settled in the area in 1632, establishing a trading post and a fort. The British arrived in 1666 and eventually supplanted the French in both trading and military presence. As a result of the colonial presence, the local islanders were displaced and much of the surrounding coastline was forced to become open grazing grounds for livestock. In the late 1700s, the British Admiralty took an interest in the bay due to its strategic location. Several naval vessels, including the HMS Surprise, were stationed there during the early 19th century. The bay was also used as a halting point for goods en route to other destinations across the Caribbean. In the 1820s, the bay once again became a haven for pirates and privateers, but it was short-lived; the British shipped in reinforcements in 1848, and eventually the pirates and privateers were driven out. In the late 19th century, Little Ffryes Bay was used extensively for fishing. The bay is still today home to a thriving fishing industry, as well as some tourism.
