The Church of São José (Portuguese for Saint Joseph) is a historical rural church in Cazengo, Cuanza Norte Province, Angola. The church dates back to the colonial period, when Angola was a Portuguese colony. It is a small chapel, measuring some 12 by 8 m, with a single nave and a Pulpit. The walls are white washed and the roof is crafted out of wooden shingles. The church contains several statues of saints, including the patron saint, São José. The church is well preserved, although there are some signs of neglect and crumbling. It is a popular destination for tourists who come to visit the nearby city of Ndalatando and to explore its surroundings. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Angola

History:

The Church of São José is a Roman Catholic parish located in the northern Angolan province of Cuanza Norte. The church has a long history as one of the earliest Catholic parishes in Angola, dating back to the 17th century. It is believed that its origins can be traced back to 1620, when Father Candido d’Andradas, a missionary of the Congregation of the Propaganda Fide, arrived in Cuanza Norte and founded the mission of São José. The church has undergone many changes throughout its history, most notably a transformation in 1881, when it was rebuilt in a French classical style in the city of Mucaba. By then, São José had become one of Angola’s most important centers of Catholic culture and education. In the early 20th century, the church underwent a series of renovations and enhancements to accommodate its increasing number of parishioners and parish activities. However, much of the work was interrupted by the Angolan Civil War of 1975-2002, during which São José was severely damaged. Today, despite sustained damage from the civil war, the Church of São José stands as one of the oldest churches in the Cuanza Norte province. It has now become an icon of the Angolan Catholic faith and continues to be a popular destination for religious ceremonies and study.
