History:
The Church of Our Lady of the Remedies was officially recognized as an independent Catholic Parish in 1915, in the city of Huíla in southwestern Angola. The origin of the church is somewhat vague, as the records of the church “were lost to Angolan history during the civil war and Portuguese colonization”. It is generally accepted that the church was founded by Portuguese settlers who arrived around 1910 to work in the agricultural production of the Huíla region. The church was initially associated with the Church of St. James the Greater in Lubango, the province's capital, and was administered by its priest from there. Over time, and with the expansion of Huíla’s population, the church began to take on its own dynamics and a diocesan parish was established in 1915. The Church of Our Lady of the Remedies was chosen as a patron of Huíla’s Catholic population. It is believed that the patron of the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies comes from the title of an apparition of Mary in Porto, Portugal, in 1797. In 1931, the first stone of the current church building was laid. After four years and efforts of the entire Catholic community of Huíla, the church was officially opened on 15 May 1935, and it is believed it still stands today. Throughout the colonial period, the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies became an important religious and cultural center for the local catholic population and was well-known for its strong devotion and piety. After Angola's independence in 1975, the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies continued to be a spiritual center for the local catholic population but also increasingly opened up its doors to the larger Angolan population. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, the church has significantly increased its presence in the community, offering services and charitable activities to all its citizens, regardless of religion. The Church of Our Lady of the Remedies remains a vibrant part of Huíla’s religious and cultural life.
