Built in the 6th century by Hisham, the son of the Ummayyad Caliph Al-Walid I, the mosque is an important historical landmark in Setif. The mosque originally consisted of four aisles and was constructed from stones, plaster, mud and bricks. Over the course of time, the mosque has been renovated, and in 1999 it underwent a full restoration project which included reconstructing the entrance façade, rebuilding the minaret, and developing a recreation ground and garden adjacent to the mosque.
