History:
Hippo Regius, known today as Annaba, was a prominent center of early Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in Algeria. Its name is derived from either the Latin word for "horse" or, according to legend, the ancient Greek deity Hippo, who lit a sacred fire that attracted devotees from the surrounding region. Hippo Regius was first mentioned in written records in the 3rd century BC when it was an active trading port. It became an important Roman city in the 2nd century BC when Marcus Aemilius Scaurus founded a naval base there. Hippo Regius was then raided by Queen Zenobia of Palmyra in the 3rd century AD, but was reconquered by the Roman Empire shortly thereafter. In the 5th century AD, Hippo Regius became the center of Augustine of Hippo's religious activity, which changed the history of North Africa and Europe. The city became an intellectual center and attracted famous scholars, religious officials, and philosophers from all over the Mediterranean region. In 708, Hippo Regius became part of the Umayyad Caliphate, and its population began to convert to Islam and the ruler renamed the city Annaba in honor of the Prophet Muhammad's daughter, Fatima al-Zahra. Throughout its long and varied history, Hippo Regius/Annaba has seen many rulers and ruling powers, held many different religions, and was part of both the Roman and Arab empires. Today, Annaba is an important university city and an important commercial center, and it is well-known for its diverse population and colorful history.
