History:
The Gouraya National Park is located in the North of the Algerian region of Béjaïa. It covers an area of 2,400 hectares and was established in 1989 as a protectorate of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. The national park was created to protect the wildlife, habitats and fauna found along the coastal forest of the Mediterranean Sea. The park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including endemic species, such as the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the red crested porcupine, the Barbary stag, the pallid harrier, the Algerian giant shrew, the Barbary macaque and many others. The park also contains important archaeological sites such as caves, tombs and megalithic structures, some dating back to the Neolithic era. The Park is also home to a wide variety of birds with over 200 species recorded, including the endangered species European roller, booted eagle and lesser kestrel. It is also one of the few places in the world where the rare species, Bearded Vulture, has been observed and recorded.
