History:

The church was built in the 5th century A.D., a few years after the death of St. Demetrius in 306 A.D. Originally, the church was much simpler, made of brick and only one room. In the 7th century the existing walled complex, which was built to protect the pilgrims and crusaders who came to worship there, was added. In the 16th century, several new wings and the bell tower were added. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Albania.
