History:

The Saint Nicholas Church in Vuno, Albania was built in the 16th century, initially as a tiny chapel and later expanded to be a full-fledged church, probably in the 19th century. On its front façade is an inscription dedicated to the father of the bishop who had it raised in 1648. The façade also bears the symbol of Saint Nicholas. In the first half of the twentieth century, the church was damaged by an earthquake, but restored to its original condition shortly after. During the rule of communism, the church was kept hidden from religious tours and the original iconography was not able to be preserved. During a celebration in 1996, a part of the façade collapsed, which resulted in a long restoration process that took almost 10 years to complete. The main part of the restoration entailed the raising of a large bell tower. In the present day, the church continues to be a significant hub of religious activity for the Vuno area. It historically serves the purpose of hosting baptisms, weddings, and cultural events, as well as community meetings with the support of the Archdiocese of Durres-Tirana. The church is mainly used by the Orthodox congregation, but local Catholics visit the place as well. Every day, the Orthodox service takes place at 7 AM. Beside the Church, there is an Orthodox monastery that was built in the late 19th century. The underground part of the monastery has been used as a shelter during wars. Today, the monastery is undergoing a major process of conservation and restoration. The church and its surroundings have become a significant tourist attraction, with many local and foreign tourists visiting the property. In 2017, the Saint Nicholas Church was included in the list of the Albanian National Monuments of Culture. In 2020, the Saint Nicholas Church was declared as a "Cultural Monument of National Significance" by the Albanian government.
