History:

Saint Demetrius Church is a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox Church located in Berat, Albania. Berat, located in the south central part of the country, is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and is sometimes referred to as the “Museum City of Albania”. The church was built in the 1330s and is dedicated to St. Demetrios, who is venerated as the patron saint of the city. The earliest historical references to the church date from 1332, when the King of Naples granted the local lords of Berat the privilege to rebuild the church that had been destroyed during the Mongol invasion of the previous century. The new church was completed in 1337 and dedicated to St. Demetrios, the Patron Saint of Berat. The church was damaged several times since then, and during the 18th century an earthquake destroyed much of the interior. Nevertheless, the walls and towers were preserved and the church was eventually restored. In the late 19th century, the façade was re-decorated in the Neo-Byzantine style. The interior of the church includes an iconostasis with 14th-century icons, as well as a painting of the Virgin Mary with Saints that dates from the 18th century. In the courtyard of the church, there is a small stone chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, which was built in the 1700s. Saint Demetrius Church continues to serve the spiritual needs of the Orthodox Christian community in Berat. Today, the church is used as venue for Christmas and Easter services and other important spiritual occasions. Each year, members of the Serbian Orthodox Church hold Pentecost celebrations in front of the church.
