Kisha e Shën Jovanit In Albania: History,Facts, & Services

Kisha e Shën Jovanit (Saint John's Church) is one of the oldest churches in Albania, located in the north-eastern part of the country near the city of Shkodra. It is named after the local saint, Jovana, who is thought to have been the daughter of an Albanian bishop who was martyred during the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans in the 15th century. Its construction dates back to at least 590 CE, though there may have been a much earlier church on this site. Kisha e Shën Jovanit is a small rectangular church with a single dome and a small bell tower. The exterior walls are decorated with motifs from the Orthodox Christian tradition and are painted in red, white, and green, the colors of the Albanian flag. Inside, there is a simple marble altar which has been in place since the 13th century. The church is used regularly for worship by the local Albanian community to this day. It is also a popular tourist destination for its history and spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains. It is one of the most important cultural and historic sites in Albania. Kisha e Shën Jovanit also provides social services to the local community, such as food and medical aid. The church also serves as a place of learning and teaching, as well as a centre for social, political, and religious dialogue between different faith traditions and cultures.
