History:
Dervish Hoxha House is a museum and historical site located in the city of Gjirokastër, Albania. The house was named after Dervish Hoxha, the former fez-maker for the sultan of Ottoman Empire. The house was built in the 19th century and at that time was owned by a local family. In 1904, Dervish Hoxha, who was working in the nearby trades of the city, purchased the house and for some time invested funds into improving and enlarging it. Dervish Hoxha House has since been a living museum of the period, preserving the culture, traditions and life of Albanians during the Ottoman rule in the area. It showcases every aspect of Dervish Hoxha’s life, such as his family, his workshop, his types of weapons and other artifacts, as well as the tools used when he made traditional fezes and qylafes.
